Bought a pack of chorizo at the supermarket the other week, £1.74. OK, so maybe it was a bit of a luxury. This week thought I might buy the same again, £1.99. No, thanks ....... might be cheaper elsewhere, but not a necessity anyway.
Which set me to thinking about the price of bread and the dizzying heights that seems to have reached in the local supermarket. Strange that I can walk to a small local convenience store owned by a big supermarket and now the prices compare favourably against those charged by the much bigger local branch of another big supermarket. Now I have the luxury of a breadmaker and packets of bread mix with interesting names. Or I can use flour, yeast and water to create from scratch. Much more enjoyable texture and flavour than the prepackaged slices from the supermarket at £1.53 and climbing.
Should I top up with diesel at 118.9p? Easter weekend and what a surprise! now 120.9
.. or if I'm passing one or two independent petrol stations i prefer to use I can still pay 118.9p instead.
So I'm not convinced it is still cheaper to shop at the supermarket than a local shop. Even begin to wonder whether the apparent competition introduced by having a frozen food chain move into the high street facilitated the price increases with its prices of £1, £2, £3.
And the Council Tax always increases, with poorer services being supplied; water, gas and electricity seem to do so as well, yet Government statisticians claim inflation is down and recovery is on the way ...... not in my house, Gordon.
